Set Intentions like a Yogi in 10 easy steps

The sages of India observed thousands of years ago that our destiny is ultimately shaped by our deepest intentions and desires. The classic Vedic text known as the Upanishads declares, “You are what your deepest desire is. As your desire is, so is your intention. As your intention is, so is your will. As your will is, so is your deed. As your deed is, so is your destiny.”



Set Intentions like a Yogi in 10 easy steps

Firstly, an intention is not a new years resolution. Statements like, “I want to earn $100k next year” or “I want to lose 10kg” are not often seen through… Intentions on the other hand, are tonnes more effective because they are more genuine and heartfelt.

You can set an intention for the year, day, drive to work or for washing the dishes. This is why they motivate real change, you can practice them anywhere, anytime. For example, driving long distances is like dragging me through hot coals – I’m not a fan. HOWEVER, I can make the whole trip 10 times better with a simple intention such as, ‘my intention for this drive to Byron is to relax and take in my surroundings.’ BOOM! That’s where my minds at and I enjoy the experience, as opposed to giving right hand lane sitters evil eyes for 90 minutes.

Does the word purpose send you into spirals of fear + anxiety as you repeat questions like, ‘what is my purpose? Who am I? Is what I’m doing worthy?’ Well, it does for me. So I learnt a long time ago to switch the word purpose for Intention…
For example: Swap a statement such as, ‘My purpose today is to do my job and make money.’ ‘My intention today is to enjoy work and be grateful for the opportunity to earn money while using utilising my knowledge and skills.’

Each time you create a new intention (a big one), hold a ceremony and create clarity with both yourself and the universe for what you want in your life. Personally, I like to make a fab hot chocolate and drink it in complete silence. With each sip, I repeat the intention and imagine the warmth of the drink filling every cell of my body with the feeling of what my intention means to me.

Create a ritual or action to cement the intention into your life. For example, if your intention is to get out of your comfort zone more often and explore the beautiful world we live in, then commit to booking a monthly ‘adventure’ somewhere you’ve never been before.

Take it easy on yourself. If you haven’t given your intentions a second thought since you created them (a year ago), don’t worry about it! Just remind yourself of what it would feel like if you did live with your intention.

Trust that the universe has your back. As Gabrielle Berstein says, “The presence of fear is a sure sign that you are trusting in your own strength.”

K.I.S.S (Keep It Simple Silly). One epic intention incorporating everything you would love to bring into your life is all you need.

Celebrate! Every time you notice yourself living with the integrity of your intention… Thank yourself! Be your own personal cheerleader!

Lastly, practice gratitude. Be grateful for your journey so far, the person you are in this very moment and for whatever is to come…

Here’s an example of an intention:

I choose to live each day with the intention to do the best I can and be proud of my achievements – whatever they may be. I am worthy of a fulfilling + beautiful life with people who love me just as much as I love them.
