Today I want to address the importance of REAL food as food of medicine over synthetic isolated supplements but first let me say this: Before we start, in order for true health to be achieved we must address the fundamental basics. Holistically a healthy diet, hydration, exercise, optimal detoxification processes, as well as our mental, emotional and spiritual health all account for your overall health. When one or more of these basic elements are out of balance, poor health can occur. It’s all about finding the right balance for you, not one person is the same so this health picture is different for everyone.

This article is about balance, in the means of synergy. ‘That a whole is better than the sum of its parts’. I wont be stipulating that supplements are bad for you but I will talk about how whole foods can be more useful in healing our bodies over isolated synthetic substances.

Whole foods are just what their name suggests: WHOLE FOODS. Naturally occurring foods found in nature are complex structures combined of enzymes, co-enzymes, elements, vitamins, antioxidants and many more phytochemicals all present for a different purpose, yet working together in synergy to maintain balance within the food. You can’t remove a nutrient and expect the balance to of the structure to remain the same. The same applies for isolated supplements over whole foods. If a substance is isolated will it still be absorbed the same? Will it still carry the same medicinal function once isolated from its other complex counter parts? These are all questions we should ask ourselves when taking our next pill for a quick fix.

Isolated Supplements are not naturally occurring. They are synthetic. Made to resemble naturally occurring chemical compounds. The nutrients in foods are blended together in a specific way and work best in that format. For an isolated nutrient to work properly in the body, it needs all the other parts that are naturally present in the food too.

I fear all of this talk of supplements with terms like food-based, healthy, raw, natural, in a highly saturated health industry has detracted us from the most important part of health and healing. No supplement will work on its own if the basic foundations of health are not in place.

A good example of this philosophy includes: Vitamin E – A powerful antioxidant present in avocados to protect the integrity of the healthy fats within. Without it the fruit would turn brown and oxidize, meaning those good fats are now rancid, the natural synergy of the chemical structure within has been compromised and the medicinal benefits of the whole food is no longer.

Again I will stipulate that some supplementations depending on circumstances can be very beneficial in acute or unique individual cases but as a whole we can treat a huge array of health concerns and lower our chances of developing a chronic disease all with the use of whole foods in our everyday diets. I recommend seeing a qualified health professional if you are considering taking any supplements. In some cases supplementation of a synthetic vitamin or mineral can make some people feel extremely unwell if there are any underlying undiagnosed medical conditions.
